Responsible gambling: 18+ only, control tools and free help
Blackjack apps are for adults who can afford what they stake. Here is what to watch for, the tools every licensed operator offers, and where to find free, confidential help at any hour.
Gambling is for adults only
You must be 18 or over to gamble in Great Britain. Licensed operators must verify your age before you can deposit or gamble, and before you can open free-to-play versions of their games.
If children share your phone or tablet, keep gambling apps behind a passcode or the device's parental controls, and log out after each session. Several operators on our list name filtering tools such as Net Nanny or CYBERsitter among their protection partners; your phone's own settings can restrict app downloads by age rating as well.
The operator carries out the age check itself; the app store only rates the app 18+. The Gambling Commission says a customer cannot place a bet until they have been verified, and that applies to a free bet or bonus as much as to your own money. Operators usually check you against databases such as credit reference agencies and the electoral roll, and may ask for a passport, driving licence or household bill. If the details do not match, expect a request for documents before your first hand, not at the point you try to withdraw.
When to stop and think
Gambling should be something you can take or leave. It is time to pause if you are spending more than you planned, chasing losses, borrowing to play, hiding it from people close to you, or feeling anxious when you are not playing.
Blackjack can make this harder to spot. Hands are quick, a session on a phone has no natural end, and a strategy can make a losing night feel like bad luck that the next hour will fix. It will not: the house edge applies to every hand, however well you play.
A simple test helps. Before you open the app, decide what the session costs you if every hand goes against you, and treat that sum as spent. If you notice yourself raising stakes to win it back, reloading after the limit you set, or playing because a notification reminded you, those are the habits the tools below exist to break. Turning off promotional notifications in your phone's settings removes one of the easiest prompts to start again.
Tools that help you stay in control
Every licensed operator must offer deposit limits over a day, a week and a month. Most also offer reality checks, time-outs and self-exclusion, all set in your account settings.
A deposit limit caps what you can pay in, and raising it only takes effect after at least 24 hours. A reality check reminds you how long you have been playing. A time-out locks your account for a short period, and self-exclusion closes it for six months or more. Which operator offers what is listed in our guide to safer gambling tools.
Many banks also let you block gambling payments on your card from the banking app, and blocking software such as BetBlocker, which is free, stops gambling sites and apps from loading on your devices.
A reality check cannot simply be dismissed in the background: the rules require you to acknowledge it before it goes away, and you choose how often it appears. Time-out lengths differ between operators: eight of the ten on our list offer 24 hours up to six weeks, while bet365 stops at 30 days and Midnite offers 1 to 30 days, so check the range before you rely on one. GamBan, another blocking tool, offers a seven-day trial and is paid after that. GambleAware's advice is to combine layers: a bank block stops the money, blocking software stops the sites, and self-exclusion stops the accounts. A bank gambling block has no effect on your credit score.
GAMSTOP
GAMSTOP is a free scheme that blocks you from signing up for or using online accounts with every gambling company licensed in Great Britain, for a period you choose from 6 months up to 5 years.
You register once at gamstop.co.uk. The registration cannot be cancelled during the period you choose, and once it ends it stays in place until you contact GAMSTOP to remove it.
Self-exclusion with a single operator works alongside it. All ten operators on our list offer it for 6 months to 5 years. Under the Commission's rules the minimum period is between six and twelve months, operators must offer at least five years, and you cannot come back on an app's own settings screen: a return has to be requested by phone or in person, with a one-day cooling-off period before the account reopens. While you are excluded, the operator may not send you marketing.
Free, confidential help
The National Gambling Helpline is open 24 hours a day, every day of the year: 0808 8020 133 in England and Scotland, and 0808 2819 265 in Wales.
The helpline is run by GamCare and also offers live chat and WhatsApp. GambleAware lists further free support. You do not need to have a serious problem to call; worrying about it is reason enough.
Our part
We list only operators licensed by the Gambling Commission, print the safer gambling message under every listing, and never describe gambling as a source of income.
There are no demo games and no game screenshots on this site, and nothing is aimed at under-18s. If anything here reads as pressure to gamble, tell us at [email protected] and we will change it.
Questions about responsible gambling
Short answers on age checks, limits, self-exclusion and where to get help.
Can I play free blackjack games without an age check?
Not at a licensed operator. Since 7 May 2019, operators licensed in Great Britain must verify your age before you can open free-to-play versions of their games.
How quickly can I raise a deposit limit?
Not straight away. An increase only happens when you ask for it, and the operator must apply a cooling-off period of at least 24 hours first. Limits can be set per day, per week and per month.
Does GAMSTOP cover every gambling app?
It covers online accounts with gambling companies licensed in Great Britain. It is free, and the period you choose runs from 6 months to 5 years.
Can I cancel a self-exclusion early?
No. A GAMSTOP registration cannot be cancelled during the period you choose, and an operator self-exclusion runs for its minimum period before you can ask to return.
Will blocking gambling payments with my bank affect my credit score?
No. GambleAware notes that a bank gambling block has no effect on your account or your credit score.
Who can I call if gambling is causing problems?
The National Gambling Helpline, free and open 24 hours a day: 0808 8020 133 in England and Scotland, 0808 2819 265 in Wales.
