Safer gambling tools in blackjack apps, from limits to GAMSTOP
From a deposit limit you set in a minute to GAMSTOP, which closes every licensed account at once: what each tool does, what the rules guarantee, and which of the ten operators lists what.

Where to start: one limit before the first hand
Set a deposit limit before you play a single hand, then a reality check. Those two cover money and time, take a minute in the account settings, and work the same in the app and the browser.
Pick the numbers away from the table. A weekly deposit limit that matches what you would happily spend on a night out is a sensible starting point, and a reality check every 30 minutes is short enough to notice on a phone, where hands run quickly. Write both down, then set them in the account menu before the first deposit. If either feels tight after a week, you can loosen it later, but the change only applies after the cooling-off wait described below, which is the protection working as designed.

Blackjack on a phone is quick. A hand takes seconds at an RNG table, and the app is always in your pocket. That is exactly why the tools below exist, and why they are easier to set when you are calm than halfway through a session.
A deposit limit caps what can go in over a day, a week or a month. A reality check interrupts the game at an interval you choose and shows how long you have been playing. If either stops feeling like enough, the stronger tools further down this page, a time-out, self-exclusion, GAMSTOP and a bank block, are there for exactly that.
Deposit limits: what the rules guarantee
8 of the ten operators list daily, weekly and monthly deposit limits. Under Gambling Commission technical standards, a licensed app must stop further deposits once you reach your limit and make you wait at least 24 hours before an increase applies.

The standards set the floor. The limit periods on offer must include 24 hours, 7 days and 1 month. Setting a limit must be presented as the default choice. Raising a limit only happens at your request and after a cooling-off period of at least 24 hours.
Midnite lists deposit limits without naming the periods, and BetMGM's deposit limit is not in the operator data we read, although BetMGM lists daily, weekly or monthly loss and stake limits and a session limit. Others go further too. LeoVegas lists loss limits and a cap on time logged in alongside its deposit limits, Coral monthly and annual loss limits plus a stake limit, Midnite loss and spending limits, and Ladbrokes a cap on the stake per slot spin. A loss limit counts net losses, so redepositing winnings does not eat into it.
Pick the period that matches how you are paid. A weekly limit is easier to keep in mind than a monthly one if your budget runs weekly.

The common ground is wide. All ten list self-exclusion from 6 months to 5 years and all ten take part in GAMSTOP. The differences sit in the shorter tools: BetMGM's deposit limit is not confirmed, Midnite does not state its deposit limit periods, and Ladbrokes, Betfred, Coral, Grosvenor and bet365 list a reality check without a stated interval. Six operators also list a self-assessment test: 247Bet, BetMGM, Ladbrokes, Betfred, Coral and LeoVegas. For the rest of what each app offers, from live tables to payout times, see the comparison on the home page.
Reality checks and time-outs
A reality check is a reminder that pops up at an interval you set and stays until you acknowledge it. A time-out locks your account for a short, fixed period, from 24 hours up to six weeks at most of these operators.

The technical standards require the facility to let you set the frequency yourself, and require you to acknowledge the reminder before it leaves the screen. Midnite offers intervals from 10 minutes to 1 hour, LeoVegas and BetMGM 15, 30, 60 or 90 minutes, and 10Bet 30 or 60 minutes. 247Bet lists play-time reminders, Ladbrokes and Betfred a pop-up alert, and Coral, Grosvenor and bet365 list reality checks without a stated interval.
A time-out is the tool for a bad evening; a bad year calls for self-exclusion. 247Bet, BetMGM, Ladbrokes, Coral, 10Bet, LeoVegas and Grosvenor list 24 hours to 6 weeks, and Betfred up to 6 weeks. bet365 lists 24 hours to 30 days and Midnite 1 to 30 days, so at those two the longest time-out is about a month. During a time-out you cannot play at that operator, but your other accounts stay open, which is the difference from self-exclusion.
Example intervalA 30-minute reality check during a one-hour plan gives two clear points to decide whether to stop.
Self-exclusion with one operator
Self-exclusion closes your account with that operator for months or years. Gambling Commission guidance says the shortest period offered should be 6 to 12 months, with the option of at least five years.

When the period ends, the exclusion does not simply lapse. Under the same guidance it stays in place for at least seven years unless you take positive action to gamble again, and a return should go through a phone call or a visit, with a one-day cooling-off period, not a quick online sign-up. While you are excluded, the operator should not send you marketing.
The weakness is scope. Excluding from Midnite does nothing at bet365, and Ladbrokes and Coral, which share one licence, are still two accounts to exclude from. That is the gap GAMSTOP closes.
GAMSTOP: every licensed operator in one step
GAMSTOP blocks you from signing up for or using online accounts with gambling companies licensed in Great Britain. You choose a period from 6 months up to 5 years, and you cannot cancel it during that time.

You register on the GAMSTOP website itself. Once the period you picked ends, the exclusion stays in place until you contact GAMSTOP to remove it. You can also choose to have it renew automatically.
Because it covers licensed operators only, GAMSTOP is also a quick test of an app: one that advertises itself to people who have self-excluded is not licensed in Great Britain. Our licence check guide shows how to confirm a licence on the register.
Bank gambling blocks and device tools
Many banks let you block gambling payments on your card from the banking app. Blocking software stops gambling sites and apps from loading on your phone, tablet or computer. Each adds another layer.

GambleAware notes that a gambling block does not close your bank account or affect your credit score, and that some banks build in a cooling-off period before the block can be removed. That delay is the point: it puts time between an impulse and a deposit. Look for it in your banking app's card settings.
For devices, GambleAware lists BetBlocker, a free app that blocks gambling websites on a phone, computer or tablet, and GamBan, which offers a seven-day free trial followed by a paid subscription. Several of the ten operators also list device tools such as Gamban, Net Nanny or CYBERsitter among their safer gambling partners. Your phone's own screen-time settings can limit a single app as well.
None of these replaces the others. GambleAware's advice is to combine them, as each one adds another layer of protection.

The helpline is run by GamCare and also offers live chat and WhatsApp. GambleAware lists further support services and how to reach them. You do not have to be in crisis to call; a conversation about how much you play is reason enough.
Questions about safer gambling tools
Short answers on limits, time-outs and exclusion in blackjack apps.
Can I set a deposit limit inside a blackjack app?
Yes. 8 of the ten operators list daily, weekly and monthly deposit limits, and the rules require every licensed app to offer limits over 24 hours, 7 days and 1 month.
How quickly can I raise a deposit limit?
Not straight away. A higher limit only applies after a cooling-off period of at least 24 hours.
What is the difference between a time-out and self-exclusion?
A time-out pauses one account for a short period, often 24 hours to six weeks. Self-exclusion closes it for six months or more and keeps you out until you take steps to return.
Are UK-licensed blackjack apps compatible with GamStop?
Yes. GAMSTOP blocks accounts with gambling companies licensed in Great Britain, apps included, for 6 months up to 5 years.
Can I cancel GAMSTOP early?
No. Once registered, you cannot cancel during the period you chose. Afterwards the exclusion stays until you contact GAMSTOP to remove it.
Does a bank gambling block affect my credit score?
No. GambleAware says a block does not close your account or affect your credit score. Some banks add a cooling-off period before it can be lifted.
Which app has the most flexible reality checks?
Midnite lists intervals from 10 minutes to 1 hour, and LeoVegas and BetMGM 15, 30, 60 or 90 minutes. 10Bet offers 30 or 60 minutes.
Do safer gambling tools work in the browser too?
Yes. Limits, time-outs and exclusions are set on your account, so they apply whether you play in the app or in a phone browser.
Who can I talk to about my gambling?
The National Gambling Helpline on 0808 8020 133 in England and Scotland, any time, or 0808 2819 265 in Wales. It is free and confidential.
